Famous World Cup resort with links to almost 700km of slopes and a wide range of après ski activities.
Kitzbühel is one of the classic all time resorts and has become renowned over the years for hosting the World Cup downhill ski race on its famous Hahnenkamm slopes. You don't have to be a world class skier to ski here though and everyone from beginners to experts will find lots to enjoy on a wide variety of terrain. It's a big resort in its own right with over 150km of runs but if you include all the associated 'Kitzbüheler Alpen' resorts then the area covers a quite incredible 700km of piste which should be enough to keep even the most fanatical skier busy for a week!
The skiing is split into two main areas, the Kitzbüheler Horn which is best for beginners and intermediates, and the Hahnenkamm which is good for all abilities. The trails on the Horn are mainly blues and reds which wind down the mountain and are ideally suited to helping groups build confidence and find their ski legs. Beginners will start on the wide open slopes at the bottom of the gondola before progressing up the mountain where they can enjoy fantastic views from the summit.
The Hahnenkamm is the main ski area and can be reached by the six person gondola from the centre of town. Here intermediate skiers should follow the Ski Safari to Pass Thurn which covers over 30km of fantastic downhill without using the same lift twice and is the best way to get to know the area. There are also plenty of challenging pistes for advanced skiers including the swooping, wooded runs of the Ehrenbachhohe and the exhilarating descents of the Barenbachkogel at Jochberg. Experts will want to test themselves on the Hahnenkamm Streif World Cup run and will also find some gigantic off piste and exciting moguls.
With superb scenery, a warm atmosphere and some of the best skiing around it's no wonder that Kitzbühel is still one of the top ski resorts in Austria. The attractive medieval town is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Wilder Kaiser mountains and is well-known for its après ski. Groups can enjoy swimming in Aquarena as well as ice skating, bowling and curling and there is a wide variety of bars, restaurants and discos. The centre of Kitzbühel is well worth a visit to explore the cobbled streets and wander around the beautiful shops.
