School ski holidays in Schladming

Now one of Austria's best. World cup cachet, north facing snow security and massive scope. A wonderful medieval village with a great nightlife

Four major areas connect to make Schladming one of the biggest linked circuits in Austria with enough variety and scope to satisfy every ability. It has also kept its charm, regularly being voted one of the most attractive towns in Austria and one of Austria's best 5 ski destinations.

Schladming has a good name as a beginners resort but is also popular with skiing greats Alberto Tomba and Hermann Maier. Arnold Schwarzenegger also has his own personal gondola here!

This forward-looking resort has one of the best lift companies in Austria. Modern, fast chairs and gondolas provide powerful uplift and a good snowmaking system is used early in the season to lay a good base. A helpful local TV weather channel, piped into our hotel, gives live broadcasts and daily forecasts.

The main area and the closest to our hotels is the Planai, which is served by a gondola and caters well for beginners and intermediates. The north-facing slopes, groomed to perfection, are hard to equal. There is a good mixture of skiing here but it is easy to venture east to neighbouring Hauser-Kaibling, which has tremendous fast runs on avenues through pine forest. West is the Hochwurzen, which has miles of gentle runs and is superb for beginners. Further west is the Reiteralm, a charming area with paths and glades, typical of Austrian skiing.

Rohrmoos also has miles of easy slopes and a 6- person chair, which can be accessed on skis from the Planai and is a good alternative for beginners. Intermediate blues and reds cover the whole 160kms.

For advanced skiers, Schladming, with its World Cup pedigree and international cachet, is definitely the place to be. Further afield is the Dachstein Glacier, included on the pass and 45mins by free ski bus.

For boarders, there are 2 half pipes, a number of fun parks and all our ski schools teach snowboarding. There is also a range of classic winter holiday pursuits available.

The pedestrianised centre of Schladming dates from 1322 and is a sheer delight. The ancient streets twinkle with fairy lights and are lined with cafés and bars. It’s also a real town with a woodyard, railway station and brewery with adjacent pub. Nightlife is very varied and there is everything from modern music to relaxing, traditional beer cellars and tea dancing. The resort is notably friendly and we are delighted to be here.
