School ski holidays in La Plagne
Fantastic opportunity for school groups to ski one of the best ski areas in the world at a great price. High snowfields, a big glacier and a vast circuit.
La Plagne is very much one of the Tarentaise big hitters and its not often that school ski groups get to ski such a great area at a good price. There are ten villages, most purpose built, some traditional, but all linked up and with convenience uppermost. Piste grooming and uplift are first class and queues are surprisingly rare for such a popular resort. It's also got bomb-proof snow security, yawning snow bowls, and pretty little tracks through woods to cobble and stone villages with actual cows! It's strange to leave a purpose-built ski resort and have a coffee in Montchavin, a charming little village with orchards and farmyards. Our hotel is located in Plagne 1800 and couldn't be more convenient. The ski school is right opposite. You just cross the road and step into your skis. There are acres of smooth, gentle slopes for beginners and loads of easy blues to help everyone find their snow legs. Huge motorway blues will boost your confidence. Fast learners will get a great sense of journey traveling between the villages.
La Plagne is definitely an intermediates' playground and is great for those who want to rack up the kilometres. For those seeking mega mileage the good news is that the new link to Les Arcs almost doubles it to a whopping 420kms.
Although there are a few tough blacks, experts will find the best skiing off-piste. The glacier is very useful and it's nice to know it's there for added snow security. Most glaciers are flat, not this one.
La Plagne invests constantly in new lifts, and the big news is the astonishing double-deck cable car, the Vanoise Express, which at 12.5m per second, takes only 4mins from Montchavin to Peisey (Les Arcs) where we have an new Equity run hotel. This is a fantastic lift, definitely worth taking for the experience alone.
Plagne 1800 is a nicely built, modern resort with convenience to the fore. The low-rise wood clad buildings are built on the human scale in traditional Savoyard style. There's a few shops, and 3 café/bars.
This is a new village, which is safe and fairly quiet so supervision is easy. There's a free bus service every half hour from 08.00 t0 00.30 between La plagne1800 and livelier Plagne Centre.
