School ski holidays in FOLGARIA
Great value, doorstep skiing and superb slopes. Recent investment has radically improved the lifts and pistes.
This picturesque area, only 1½hrs from Verona, is perfect for school parties and we recommend it very highly. You have an undemanding ski area with good progression, pretty villages with character, and friendly people who are patient and welcoming to school children. The skiing has improved greatly in recent years. Pistes have been remodelled and lifts have been built so that Folgaria now has more variety and scope. Beginners were always well catered for but now it’s great for intermediates too. System development here is positively frenzied. We have never known a lift company do so much, so quickly. More snow cannons and chairlifts appear every year!
Beginners have sheltered nursery slopes and good snow at altitude to inspire confidence. Progression is easy and natural and there are interesting journeys on pretty tree-lined runs. Intermediates have an array of well kept, fairly amiable blues and reds and quite high mileage of 100km. The best area, about 60km, is just above Folgaria and Serrada, and offers open bowl skiing with various runs through the trees on undulating gentle slopes which are great fun for youngsters. Right behind our Hotel Martinella there is a moving-carpet type beginners lift. Modern snow-making now covers almost the whole system and there’s a new skating rink.
The English speaking Ski School is friendly and helpful, as are all the local suppliers. Overall, Folgaria is notably good value and a good place to learn and develop ski technique. It is deservedly popular with schools and Italian families.
The village of Folgaria is quite a long way from the lifts; but it has lots of atmosphere of the Sud Tirol variety, and is certainly worth visiting. The Hotel Monte Maggio is in Fondo Grande, just above Folgaria, and is actually in the ski system itself at the meeting point of lifts and pistes it could not be more convenient. There are a few farm buildings and the odd bar dotted around.
The Hotel Martinella is in picturesque Serrada and is well positioned at the bottom of the main run back to the village with a chairlift just outside.
Serrada is a typical Trentino farming village, stone built, timber roofed, and full of charm. The Santa Rosalia is in Costa, which is also a ski village, and is very close to Folgaria. A new 4 man chair was built in Costa in 2005/06 to shoot you up into the heart of the system.
Village Facts
Folgaria - An alpine gem. With its onion domed church, shops and coffee houses, it recalls the days when the Sud Tyrol was part of Austria. It has all the traditional winter pursuits and always seems to have a festive, Christmas atmosphere. It's only 5mins drive from our hotels and we certainly suggest at least one evening for shopping and a night out.
