World Cup resort that is famous for its fantastic snow record. Small but perfectly formed!
Sella Nevea is located in the Alpi Guilie Dolomites very close to Austria and Slovenia. The main claim to fame of this resort is supreme snow security and due to its location and abundant snowfalls the ski season can begin at the end of September and last until May.
A close translation of the words Sella Nevea would be ‘snow saddle’ and nothing could be more appropriate. Sella Nevea is also fairly unique as it links to both Austria and Slovenia. An extension pass is available at a supplement which allows you to take advantage of these links and enjoy the skiing at Villach in Austria and explore the slopes at Bovec in Slovenia.
The developing village is right in the middle of the saddle and is largely made up of purpose-built hotels at the bottom of a deep funnel of mountains which are protected from sunshine for most of the day. There are nursery slopes in the village and a baby tow feeds a nursery area specially designed for the local ski school. This is consistent with the serious ski intentions of this small village and the ski school itself is first rate.
There is fairly wide choice of blue and red runs as well as a World Cup run, served by another tow or chairlift, which is a fast slalom used by the Italian ski team. There is also an alternative intermediate run through the trees. Whilst the village itself has a tremendous snow record, total snow security is provided by the glacier where much of the skiing takes place and this is used for summer training by the Italian ski team - the cable car ride taking about five minutes. There are two very exciting descents from the glacier one of which is classified as an FIS downhill and giant slalom. Stunning views prevail from the glacier with majestic peaks completing the panorama. Sella Nevea is also popular with Alberto Tomba the Italian ski legend.
