School ski holidays in Maine, Sugarloaf

The one mountain resort that, by design, is great for groups, with the only lift-served, above tree-line skiing in the East.

Sugarloaf was the vision of Amos Winter. His dream was of longer runs, steeper pitches and more continuous vertical drop than anyone had ever seen before in the Eastern United States – welcome to Sugarloaf! This is the second highest peak in Maine and provides the only lift-served, above treeline skiing on the East coast. It's big, the ski pass is self-explanatory and the progression for all standards is superb.

Even the drive in to Sugarloaf is exciting because the scenery is stunning. Be sure to stay awake because "Oh my gosh corner", your first-time view of Sugarloaf, will take your breath away. You're also likely to see one of Maine's most colourful characters, the moose.

The clever lift design ensures that there is a challenge for everyone. The skiing gets progressively harder as you go higher, although there is an easy run for beginners from top to bottom. Beginners can enjoy gentle sloping trails and long winding cruising runs, which also suit intermediates. A real plus for school groups is that all trails eventually lead back to the base lodge, making it very easy to meet up at a central location. Advanced skiers will no doubt be challenged by the tough terrain of the backside snowfields and black diamond glades.

The pedestrianised village has been developed in true Nordic style, with all amenities conveniently on hand. The majority of the accommodation is slopeside so walking in ski boots is kept to a minimum and a free shuttle bus also circulates around the resort should you need it. The Sugarloaf Sports and Fitness club, featuring an indoor pool, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, sauna and steam room, is a great place to relax and unwind after a full day on the slopes and is free to our groups.
